3D for Reverse Engineering

What is Reverse Engineering?

Reverse engineering describes the process of creating digital 3D models from existing objects in order to reconstruct or improve them. This is an important process in many industries, for example in product development, healthcare and mechanical engineering.

Suppose you are a mechanical engineer and plan to use an existing component as a CAD design basis for your prototype. For the CAD program, you need a 3D model of the component. Redrawing this by hand is time-consuming and difficult.

But how else do you get a CAD model of your component?

3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering

Quite simply: with the right 3D scanner. The accuracy of the scanner plays a decisive role in reverse engineering. In order to successfully scan the component for the prototype, a 3D scanner with an accuracy of between 0.3 - 0.8 mm is often sufficient.

In general, mobile and easy-to-use 3D scanners are particularly suitable for reverse engineering. Unlike stationary scanners, a portable scanner saves you from having to disassemble the heavy component and transport it to the scanner. You can start scanning directly on site if your new device is easy to use at the same time.

In addition to mobility and user-friendliness, consider whether pre-treatment of your part is necessary when choosing a scanner. It is tricky to scan complicated surface textures - especially if they are reflective.

Common scanners require stickers to be applied to glossy scan objects. The alternative pre-treatment with chalk spray also prolongs the scanning process. Is the time-consuming pre-treatment of the parts really necessary with all 3D scanners?

New Technology for Reflective Materials

With the new Polarox technology, you scan matte and glossy components without pre-treatment. This is made possible by the combination of photogrammetry, time-of-flight technology and polarization. These technologies complement each other perfectly, so that after a 15-minute scan and further calculation time, you receive your high-quality and precise 3D model of the component.

The Polarox technology, which makes your life easier, can only be found in the Scoobe3D Precision. For reverse engineering, you scan precise 3D models of different objects - with any material and even high complexity of your component.

But how does the Scoobe3D Precision make reverse engineering your component even easier? Below you'll find benefits such as mobility, user-friendliness, accuracy and resolution.

1. Mobility

  • The integrated rechargeable battery and the smartphone size of the Scoobe3D Precision allow you to scan objects even when space is limited
  • The portable scanner saves you hours of disassembling, reassembling and transporting your heavy component
  • Just put the Scoobe3D Precision in your pocket and use it at your desired location

2. User-friendliness

  • The Scoobe3D Precision is simple and intuitive to use
  • The Android user interface reminds you of your own smartphone
  • On the display, you will receive instructions from the pre-installed scan app, which will further facilitate scanning
  • Say goodbye to intensive training and scan your part on the first try

3. Resolution and Accuracy

  • The high accuracy and resolution of the 3D scanner provide you with complete 3D models
  • You don't have to rework your models, because they are already complete with the Scoobe3D Precision
